Secondments are the most exciting months and suppose great opportunities to learn in different areas, meet interesting people and advance in our researches

Hi! I am ESR8, Arne Schmidt and I recently moved to Valencia to attend three secondments at different host institutions (UPV, Tyris Software and INCLIVA). Next, I’ll describe my experience and progress at UPV.

Within the CLARIFY project, there are different secondments to foster the connections between the different institutions and facilitate the interdisciplinary exchange. For me, there are three different secondments planned for this year – at the Polytechnical University of Valencia (UPV), the medical research center INCLIVA, and the software startup Tyris Software.

The first secondment is at the UPV where I am collaborating with Claudio Fernandez Martin (ESR6) in a project about the diagnosis of Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC). The goal is to help pathologists with Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to obtain better cancer diagnoses with whole slide images. To estimate the severity of TNBC, several factors have to be taken into account, like mitotic count in tumor areas or the characteristics of Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TILs) and we hope that AI predictions can make the diagnostic process more accurate and faster.

For the next secondment at Tyris, I will be able to strengthen my software engineering background and learn about applied AI in production. Finally, at INCLIVA I will be able to learn from pathologists about the medical background of cancer classification with histopathological images and the diagnostic process in practice. I am looking forward to more exciting months with great opportunities to learn in different areas, meet interesting people and advance in our research.
